Summary

In a steady state, it is found that spatially varying energy density of the electric field (E) orthogonal to B produces electric current, given under certain conditions, by $$\underline {\rm j} = \left[ {\underline \Delta \left( {{\rm \varepsilon E}ˆ{\rm 2} } \right)} \right] \times \underline {\rm B} /8{\rm \pi B}ˆ{\rm 2} ,$$ where ϵ is the dielectric constant of the plasma for fields orthogonal to B. The current is significant in geophysical and astrophysical plasmas.
