Recent development of a large-volume, high-pressure flat belt apparatus provides the opportunity for the synthetic study of large size minerals and rocks. Apparatuses with 300-ml and 1000-ml chamber volumes were constructed for operation in a pressure range of 5–7 GPa. An apparatus with a 1000 ml chamber volume can obtain polycrystalline samples of 50 mm in diameter and 50 mm in thickness. Polycrystalline diamond of this size will be useful as a new anvil material for generation of ultra high pressure in the near future. This paper describes the design of high-pressure anvils, cylinders, gaskets, and sample chambers for the flat belt type of apparatus with a large volume (FB75 and FB120). A newly constructed, 30,000-ton hydraulic press of the wire-winding type is also briefly reported here.
