Bulk modulus and thermal expansion of pyrope, almandine, and two majorites, with the compositions 58% enstatite-42% pyrope solid solution and 18% ferrosilite-82% almandine solid solution, were measured using a cubic-anvil type of high-pressure and high-temperature X-ray diffraction apparatus combined with synchrotron radiation. Based on these measurements, we established the systematics of the elastic property in pyroxene-garnet join.
It was found that dissolution of the pyroxene component in garnet decreases the bulk modulus. This result is contrary to previously reported results, and thus gives new constraints to the model of the earth's mantle. It was also found that thermal expansion of garnet changes very little with dissolution of the pyroxene component. The volume dependence of thermal expansion for garnet was also measured.
