Experimental data on volume as a function of pressure can now be obtained at maximum pressures of almost twice that of the earth's core-mantle boundary. Thus experimental data can be compared directly with seismic observations. Extrapolated values of experimental data from zero pressure or from any intermediate pressure below the pressure of application are not justified because of significantly high errors. The most accurate derived value of any given data set occurs between 15 and 85% of the maximum experimental pressure range. Tests of these concepts using the Murnaghan and Birch finite strain equations demonstrate the distribution of errors and describe the basis for evaluation of K, K′, and V of mantle materials.
