Summary

A variational procedure for calculating the eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of long period core modes (< 300μHz) is constructed and implemented. For the first time, realistic Earth properties are fully taken into account, including compressibility and stratification of the fluid core, self-gravitation, and elasticity of the shell. Combined with the possible recent gravimetric observation of such modes, a new field of long period core spectroscopy may be emerging.
