Summary

Extrusive basalts are a specific feature of the Mesozoic-Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the lithosphere. In many sedimentary basins basalt flows cover oil- and gas-bearing strata. It is shown that basalt flows may serve as good seals for hydrocarbon pools. In some cases they produce thermal effects on the chemistry of hydrocarbons.
