Summary

Contrary to the usual belief that MHD intermediate shocks are extraneous, we have recently shown by numerical solutions of dissipative MHD equations that intermediate shocks are admissible and can be formed through nonlinear steepening from continuous waves. Some aspects of intermediate shocks are presented. Since a transverse magnetic field can only rotate across “intermediate shocks” in dissipative MHD, one expects an intermediate shock, instead of a rotational discontinuity, to exist at the magnetopause.
