Summary

We consider the problem of quasistatic evolution of a magnetic configuration on the Sun under the action of shear motions at footpoints of field lines on the photosphere. It is shown that an equilibrium system (a magnetic configuration), with a certain value of shear, changes its structure qualitatively, i.e., a topological reconstruction occurs. The character of the transition from one equilibrium magnetic field configuration to another one depends strongly on the flow structure at field line footpoints and on the boundary conditions imposed on the original magnetic configuration. It is shown that for a loop arcade a shear motion such as a viscous boundary layer leads to its topological reconstruction, with the energy released comparable with that released in large solar flares. The topology of the original arcade configuration, when a critical value of shear is reached, becomes an open one.
