Summary

An electrodynamical model of solar flares is proposed which takes into account the energy transport into a current sheet, its release and the generation of field-aligned currents mapping to the photosphere. The analogy between solar flares and magnetospheric substorms is discussed. The energy of the X-ray radiation in flare kernels, and the maximum energy of particles accelerated in the current sheet are estimated.
