Summary

We here consider a normal mode analysis for the instability of a straight flux tube and suggest that emerging curved loops may become unstable. A scenario for reconnection of emerging loops with an overlying arcade is put forward to explain two-ribbon solar flares, similar to the Emerging Flux Model of Heyvaerts, Priest and Rust [1977].
