Summary

New bulk speed, density and temperature values are presented for protons and water group ions based on the data of the two ion sensors of the Giotto JPA experiment. Two water group ion populations, implanted locally and further upstream, evolve with different density and temperature during the fly-by. In the inbound leg of the Giotto trajectory the centre of mass switches from the protons to the water group ions between 5.2×105 km and 4.8×105 km from closest approach and to the locally picked up ions between 4.7×105 km and 3.9×105 km; in the outbound leg the centre of mass switches to the water group ions between 3.3×105 km and 3×105 km and to the locally implanted ions around 2.9×105 km from the nucleus.
