  • Magnetospheric substorms—Congresses


Magnetospheric physics has grown out of classical disciplines, such as geomagnetism, auroral physics, ionospheric physics and cosmic ray physics after 1958 and has had a fascinating history of development. The purpose of this paper is to furnish the general background for those that follow by describing briefly the historical development. It is emphasized that magnetospheric physics and a study of magnetospheric substorms are still in the developmental stage. A new instrumental development, a new analytical finding or a new theoretical progress could lead this discipline to a new era of development far beyond the present generation can conceive of at this time. Many basic processes we reveal in this discipline may be applicable to solar, stellar and interstellar phenomena.
