- Magnetospheric substorms—Congresses
A three phase model (initial phase + break-up one + recovery one) of substorms is discussed, and the physical processes which develop in the magnetotail during these phases are considered. These are developed from a single point of view on the substorm as a result of magnetic field reconnection in the magnetotail. Development of spontaneous and triggered break-ups is studied, and characteristics of the behavior of the magnetic field in the magnetosphere during break-ups of the two types are discussed. A method for separating the potential and vortex parts of the magnetospheric electric field is proposed. The variation of those fields and the energetics of the substorm at various phases are also studied.
