We have studied global aurora dynamics by the analyses of high time resolution UV-images acquired on the AKEBONO satellite. The substorm expansion onset is one of challenging targets in studies of global aurora dynamics. It is confirmed that the expansion onset is constituted by succeeding two stages. The first stage is the initial brightening within a localized region of 1 hour longitudinal extent and continues for several minutes. The succeeding one is the flaring-up, which follows the former and accompanies breakup aurora displays including bulge-surge formation.
