A three-dimensional model of magnetic merging at the magnetopause

The three-dimensional problem of magnetopause merging has been analyzed using an extension of Alfvén's neutral-sheet field annihilation model. That model has been generalized for an arbitrary magnitude and direction of the interplanetary magnetic field. The analysis provides a quantitative prediction of the merging rate that is consistent with the observed dependence of geomagnetic activity on the direction and magnitude of the interplanetary magnetic field.
