Evidence for the existence of nighttime F-region polarization fields at Arecibo

Recent measurements are presented of F-region ion drifts made at Arecibo using a new continuous beamswinging technique. The measurements are applied to the question of the origin of the F-region electric field over Arecibo. It is shown that the daytime electric fields are probably caused by E-region tidal winds, while the nighttime electric fields appear to be generated in the F region itself by thermospheric winds.
