The intensity correlation function for an extended incoherent source seen through strong turbulence is worked out assuming that the intensity randomization U≫ 1. The scintillation index is found as a function of source angular size θ0, path length z, wave number k, strength of turbulence A, and slope of the assumed power law turbulence spectrum α (α = 11/3 for the Kolmogoroff case). The scintillation index drops to about 0.5 when Ak2 Zαθ0α−2 ≈ 1.
