Polar D-region electron density profiles during a solar proton event

Abstract

Polar D-region electron density profiles during a moderate solar proton event are calculated using a full-wave computer solution on VLF step frequency sounder data from Byrd Station, Antarctica. VLF reflection height variation with solar proton flux, particle precipitation from the magnetosphere, and solar zenith angle are shown. It is suggested that the mesospheric pressure during this event is less than that extrapolated from an atmospheric model.
