Approximate expressions for the ac quasi-static fields produced by a horizontal electric dipole (HED) antenna located within a conducting slab have been derived by employing finitely conducting earth image theory techniques. Asymptotic results have also been obtained by applying the quasi-near approximation to the basic Sommerfeld integrals. The resulting approximations agree with previously derived numerical integration results. The resulting expressions are particularly applicable to short-range electromagnetic propagation in a shallow sea.
