Protonospheric depletion and recovery during geomagnetic storms

The average response of protonospheric electron content, as measured by the ATS 6 radio beacon experiment, to geomagnetic storms is determined for a ray path/L shell geometry with L = 1.35 being the lowest intersected and the transmission path almost transverse to the L shells. The results show maximum absolute positive and negative departures of NP from mean levels, associated with storms and a recovery time of ∼6 days in agreement with previous results for other geometries. The NP variation seems to be modulated by modifed ionospheric fluxes during the storm time.
