Electron density and electron content fluctuations in the auroral zone

Abstract

High-latitude observations of electron density by means of incoherent scatter radar have been integrated to give electron content up to about 700 km altitude. The electron content is found to be highly variable on time scales down to a minute, and the variations are large enough to have significant effects on transionospheric radio propagation. In some cases the horizontal velocities of the enhancements, and their temperatures, have been determined. It is likely that more than one source is involved.
