Summary

The recognition by Le Pichon and Heirtzler (1968) of sea floor spreading magnetic anomalies in the Indian Ocean started a phase of exploration that culminated in the drilling in 1972 and early 1973 of twenty-three sites in the eastern Indian Ocean. Several models of the evolution of the region were made during the course of this exploration. Augmented by subsequent work, the magnetic and deep sea drilling data can be linked in a model that entails the generation of the eastern Indian Ocean by four stages of spreading.
