Animals eat to satisfy their need for energy for cellular respiration; carbon skeletons and other elements such as nitrogen for the synthesis of larger organic molecules; and essential nutrients that the animal cannot synthesize from any raw material. The nutrients that animals need include water, carbohydrates, lipids and proteins, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals.
