Abstract

Microscopic colitis1[2][3]–4 represents an area of communication difficulty, especially between gastroenterologists and histopathologists. The authors of this commentary welcome the paper of Libbrecht et al.5 in this issue of Histopathology which describes a form of microscopic colitis. This exemplifies the fact that the original classification of lymphocytic or collagenous colitis is a little limited for routine diagnosis and understanding of the aetiology of microscopic colitis. The unhelpful term `non-specific colitis' is best avoided, so the classification of microscopic colitis needs to evolve.
