Summary

Ainhum (Dactylolysis spontanea) is a self-limiting condition resulting in auto-amputation. It usually affects the fifth toe of Blacks living in warm climates. The world wide incidence of this condition is rare and seldom reported in temperate regions. This paper discusses the aetiology and describes a case of Ainhum. The clinical features of this rare disease are emphasised to facilitate diagnosis and appropriate management.
