The crystallization of membrane proteins is described. The topics covered include the principles of membrane-protein crystallization, general properties of detergents relevant to membrane-protein crystallization, the ‘small amphiphile concept’, membrane-protein crystallization with the help of antibody Fv fragments and membrane-protein crystallization using cubic bicontinuous lipidic phases. General recommendations on crystallizing membrane proteins are provided, and membrane proteins with known structures and potentially useful detergents are tabulated.
