Abstract

This article shows that the so-called ‘Boroughbridge roll of arms’ cannot have been compiled to commemorate that battle. Investigation based on comparison with other rolls of arms and biographical information of those named suggests that it was drawn up in connection with a tournament held during the Berwick campaign of late 1319. As such, it reveals the informality of an event of this type arranged to entertain the troops.
