    1. Arturo Escobar was born and grew up in Colombia. He was educated at the Universidad del Valle (Cali, Colombia), Cornell University, and the University of California, Berkeley (Ph.D. 1987). He is the author of Encountering Development: The Making and Unmaking of the Third World (1995). He has been working in the Colombian Pacific since 1993 in collaboration with local social movements and organisations.
