(August 16, 1937 – September 7, 2013)
Frances Katz, former Director of Publications at IFT, passed away after a major stroke on September 7, 2013 at the Univ. of Illinois Hospital. She was 76. Fran joined IFT staff in 1996 as Editor of Food Technology and Director of Publications, overseeing Journal of Food Science and other IFT publications. Prior to her time at IFT, Fran worked in corporate food processing management and food industry magazine editorial positions for over 30 years, including 18 years at American Maize. Later, Fran served as Chief Operating Officer and Director of Publications at American Society of Agronomy.
Fran was instrumental in the creation and launch of the “Industrial Application Briefs” in JFS. She wrote over 100 Industrial Applications columns for the journal—one in every issue since January 2000. Even after her retirement, Fran continued to read every newly-accepted JFS paper and select those that she wanted to highlight as having a novel application in industry.
In her first column (JFS 65(1):iv-v, available at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1750-3841.12285/suppinfo), Fran wrote, “We hope this information may help you in your quest for safer, fresher, tastier, healthier, less expensive products.” Considering the consistent popularity among our readers of the Industrial Application Briefs, we believe Fran was successful in her mission. For her significant contribution and dedication to this journal, we are extremely grateful. The journals staff will miss our monthly discussions with Fran about the latest papers, what is currently growing in our gardens, our favorite foods, and the changes of the seasons.
Fran was a supporter of the Worldwide Rotary Polio Eradication Campaign. Donations in Fran's memory may be made to The Rotary Foundation.
