This includes the fields of user focus, ergonomics, accessible design, and social innovation focusing on the micro processes of human interpretation of, and behavior toward, designed artifacts. More recently, Collins's interests have included the intercultural aspect of identity across East and West and the implication this has for the field of design management. Collins comes from an academic and professional background in interior architecture and management. Her PhD, from the University of Strathclyde, is in management within the context of international architecture.

It may be that design thinking needs to be seen by business as nothing less than a paradigm shift rather than as a process like TQM or JIT.
