      Cover Illustration: Photomicrographs of embryonic zebrafish (20, 22, and 25 hours post fertilization) highlight the rapid development of this organism. During this time, the locomotor apparatus of the embryo is becoming functional. Zebrafish embryos exposed to nicotine exhibit a robust motor output which is mediated by activation of neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs). In general, neuronal nAChRs are comprised of α and β subunits. For details, see the article of Menelaou et al.       The dopamine (DA) terminal fields in the rat dorsal striatum (DS) and nucleus accumbens core (NAcc) are organized as patchworks of domains that exhibit distinct kinetics of DA release and clearance. Our findings reveal that within the NAcc, nomifensine preferentially enhanced evoked dopamine overflow in the slow compared to the fast domains. Our analysis also leads to the novel finding that nomifensine preferentially increases the apparent KM in the NAcc compared to the DS: apparent KM increased by ~500% in the NAcc and ~200% in the DS.

      Mood disorders plague scores of people, with far reaching ramifications on world society and economy. The prevalence of anxiety disorders is clearly sex-dependent, with some studies reporting a double-fold preponderance of women to develop anxiety and depression. Psychiatric illnesses are currently studied as disorders of the central nervous system, which involve distinct brain circuits that govern behavior. In the following research we assess the effects of estrogens on physiology and behavior, and suggest a potential mechanism whereby estrogens affect the dorsal premammillary nucleus of the hypothalamus to affect behaviors associated with fear and anxiety.

      We tested the involvement of the DMS in the protective effect of ES. ES, but not yoked IS, produced a large increase of Fos activity in the DMS. Consistent with the Fos data, D-AP5 in the DMS, but not in the DLS, prevented the inhibition of DRN 5HT release normally produced by ES. Furthermore, D-AP5 administered before ES into the DMS, but not into the DLS, increased anxiety 24 h later, leading to levels similar to those produced by IS. These results suggest that, as with appetitive act/outcome contingency learning, the protective effects of behavioral control over a stressor require the posterior dorsal medial striatum.

      Rats with unilateral orexin-saporin lesions of lateral hypothalamus failed to acquire conditioned orienting responses or show surprise-induced enhancement of cue associability. These unilateral lesions also produced bilateral impairments in FOS expression in amygdala central nucleus, a region critical to both of these attentional phenomena. Other associative learning phenomena that do not require modulation of attentional processing were unaffected.

      An inequitable loss of own money during the induction of laser pain reduced pain intensity reports and laser evoked potentials, selectively in participants who believed to be playing against a human opponent. The vertex complex N2P2 was reduced when Believers were playing with their own money as compared to when they were playing on behalf of a third party. These findings indicate that social interactions modulate behavioral and neural reactivity to laser pain.

      Through observed behaviour and ERP measures, this study evaluates possible links between endogenous and exogenous attention and inhibition of return in touch. This study demonstrated strong correlations between behavioural and ERP effects of endogenous attention in touch. Moreover, early ERP markers of exogenous attention were influenced by endogenous orienting when task demands increased.

      Modulation of alpha and gamma oscillations related to retrospectively orienting attention within working memory (pages 2399–2405)

      Our study shows that orienting attention retrospectively to internal representations held in working memory modulated the patterns of neural oscillatory activity in the ventral visual cortex. Specifically, we observed greater alpha activity in the ventral visual cortex ipsilateral to the attended hemifield, supporting its active functional inhibitory role. This pattern of activity was accompanied by an increase in gamma activity contralateral to the attended hemifield, which can reflect attentional orienting and selective processing.

      We provide evidence that in MPTP mouse model of Parkinson's disease, viral vector-mediated striatal overexpression of pENK before dopamine depletion reduced degeneration of nigrostriatal dopaminergic terminals, and increased dopamine concentration and dopamine turnover in the globus pallidus. Therefore, increased expression of ENK in the basal ganglia could have protective effects against MPTP insult.

      We confirm previous findings indicative of widespread posterior cortical atrophy in early manifest HD. Despite this volume loss changes of visual system activity at rest are limited to the left fusiform cortex, and the majority of posterior cortical volume changes do not substantially affect visual system activity. The relationship between fusiform cortical activity changes and visuomotor performance indicates behaviorally relevant contributions of extrastriate visual areas to cognition.

      Tinnitus was induced in guinea pigs by exposing animals to loud noise, behaviourally identified, and compared with a series of neural markers. Spontaneous neuronal firing in the inferior colliculus increased after noise exposure but this did not correlate with behavioural tinnitus. Auditory brainstem response latencies were reduced in animals with tinnitus, while asymmetric nitric oxide synthase staining was identified in animals with tinnitus.

      The microtubule-associated protein Tau is responsible for a large group of neurodegenerative disorders, known as tauopathies, including Alzheimer's Disease. Remarkably, tauopathy in brain of hibernating mammals is not pathogenic and fully reversible. We here demonstrate that precocious mortality of Tau.P301L mice is typified by hypothermia that aggravates Tau phosphorylation, but surprisingly totally independent of the GSK3a/b kinases. The data advocate to include body-temperature as parameter in the analysis of pre-clinical models, and by extension in patients suffering from tauopathy.

      There is suggestion of bilateral primary motor cortex reorganisation following lower-limb amputation. Increased corticomotor excitability of the ipsilateral primary motor cortex may influence function.       Treatment with levodopa initiated on day 2 and continued for 5 days after after transient occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (tMCAO) significantly reduces the number of CD3+/CD8+ T-cells and pro-inflammatory cytokines in the ischemic hemisphere. We also show that levodopa treatment decreased the levels of Intercellular Adhesion Molecule 1 (ICAM-1) in the ischemic territory.
