Attention is directed to the intersection between the personal and the institutional in the study of the presidency, as suited to its place in the separated system. The postwar era is stressed, featuring, as it does, split-party government in many variants. A range of research topics is proposed as a rich agenda of studies contributing to our understanding of the personal/institutional nexus.
