In the last issue, 37.2, p.401–03, three lines were inadvertently omitted from Lionel Casson's review of Rethinking the Mediterranean (W. V. Harris ed., 2006). The sentence at the end of p.402 column 2 should have read ‘It was in the Mediterranean that this invention [the oared warship] came into being and brought in its wake special fleets, special battle tactics, the recruiting of special crews, all of which had significant effects on Mediterranean demography and society . . .’. This adds substantially to the meaning of the passage and we apologise for the omission.
