The pituitaries of Amia, Lepidosteus and Acipenser.

Authors

Summary.

  • 1An anatomical and histological description is given of the pituitaries of adult Amia, Lepidosteus and Acipenser.
  • 1In Acipenser a hypophysial cavity is present, in the others it has been suppressed during development; otherwise the structure of the pituitary in all three appears to represent a more primitive level of the same type of organization as found in the teleosts.
  • 3A hypothetical scheme is outlined of relationships between the pituitaries of teleosts and of higher types.
