The endocranial capacities of the Australopithecinae.

  • 1Modern statistical techniques have been used to compare the endocranial volumes of the Australopithecinae as published by Broom and his associates with those of the chimpanzee, gorilla, and Pithecanthropus.
  • 2It is shown that although the endocranial volumes of most of these extinct anthropoids are greater than in the chimpanzee, none differs significantly from the male gorilla, whereas all are significantly smaller than in the hominid genus Pithecanthropus.
  • 3Certain published statements about the cranial capacities of these fossils are discussed.
