ABSTRACT
A description is given of the separation of wall tile from their cement backing in a Seattle apartment hotel. Tests of the tile and delayed observations indicated that the failures were caused by an excessive shrinkage of the cement-clay-sand backing wall. Precautions should be taken against setting tile on a green unshrunk, flimsy, backing wall, especially when the plastered surface is over 1 inch in thickness and can shrink en bloc over large areas. An excessive amount of clay or other plasticizers will likewise increase the shrinkage and danger of separation.
