Delayed onset of inflammatory nodules following hay fever desensitization injections

Dr S.K. Jones, Department of Dermatology, Bristol Royal Infirmary, Bristol BS2 8HW, UK.

Immediate anaphylaxis, short-lived local reactions and occasionally tender nodules lasting for several years have all been described after desensitization injections for hay fever.

We report two patients who developed painful nodules at injection sites several years after desensitization. Unlike previous reports, it would seem that this is not related to the aluminium content of the injections and may be a local reaction to late release of antigen iu pollen. These late reactions add a further complication to the use of desensitization injections.
