Appendix S1. Supplementary methods and results.

Table S1. Water types on the final sampling date. Highlighted sites correspond to those that were part of the manipulative artificial pool experiment, while non-highlighted sites were part of the observation-only study. The values for each site on each date refer to the type of site on that date, where ‘Stream’ = flowing stream present within 55 m of trap, ‘Pool’ = natural pool present within 55 m of trap, ‘A Pool’ = artificially constructed and maintained pool present within 1 m of trap and “Dry” = no water present within 55 m of trap. See notes for explanations of which samples were included in each analysis.

Table S2. Generalized Variance Inflation Factors (GVIF) for the final subset of included environmental parameters. The response metric for this set of GVIF is the Shannon’s Diversity of arthropod families. GVIF below 10 indicates a lack of multi-collinearity.

Table S3. General linear model results for total abundance and diversity measures of arthropod families, comparing dry and flowing sites on 25 June 2006.

Table S4. General linear model results for total abundance and diversity measures of arthropod families, examining association with environmental factors on 25 June 2006.

Table S5. Tests of spatial autocorrelation for previously significant differences between flowing and dry sites.

Table S6. Tests of spatial autocorrelation and spatially corrected results for previously significant associations between environmental factors and response variables.

Table S7. Results of multivariate adonis analyses examining community composition of families of riparian arthropods.

Table S8. General linear model results for the abundance of selected arthropod families, comparing dry and flowing sites on 25 June 2006.

Table S9. General linear model results for abundance of selected arthropod families, examining association with environmental factors on 25 June 2006.

Table S10. Results of multivariate adonis analyses examining community composition of genera of carabid beetles.

Table S11. General linear model results for diversity measures of carabid genera, comparing dry and flowing sites on 25 June 2006.

Table S12. General linear model results for diversity measures of carabid genera, examining association with environmental factors on 25 June 2006.

Table S13. General linear model results for the abundance of carabid genera, comparing dry and flowing sites on 25 June 2006.

Table S14. General linear model results for abundance of carabid genera, examining association with environmental factors on 25 June 2006.
