SUMMARY

The revision of terms under criterion 3 as proposed by CROOK (1965) is timely and should be accepted. Useful new terms are proposed to describe the three-dimensional shape of cross-strata, but there is as yet insufficient evidence for using cross-stratal shape as a criterion for classification in a scheme in which morphological characters are selected for their known genetical significance. The proposed revision of criterion 5 is difficult to accept because it is not in accord with known cross-stratification genesis.
