Document of the IUPAC-IUB Commission on Biochemical Nomenclature (CBN) approved by IUPAC and IUB in 1976. These Recommendations are a revision and extention of ‘The Nomenclature of Lipids’ which appeared in 1967 and was amended in 1970 . Comments and suggestions for future revisions may be sent to any member of CBN: O. Hoffmann-Ostenhof (chairman), W. E. Cohn (secretary), A. E. Braunstein, H. B. F. Dixon, B. L. Horecker, W. B. Jakoby, P. Karlson, W. Klyne, C. Liébecq, and E. C. Webb.

1CBN does not wish to imply that the idea of stereospecific numbering should be applied to other groups of compounds. It is the symmetery of glycerol itself, but the asymmetery of its derivatives carrying different substitutents at O-1 and O-3, as well as the unique place of these compounds in lipid metabolism, that makes this special treatment desirable.
