in 1874, Dr. Aubrey Bowen, one of Melbourne's earliest ophthalmic surgeons, took possession of a new and elegant house in Collins Street East. Here he lived and practised for sixteen years, and after him the house had further medical associations. Almost all similar doctors' homes have disappeared from the area, but this building persists, offering a reminder of a style of practice now gone. Fortunately, it and the buildings nearby have been classified by the National Trust of Australia (Victoria).
