Figure 3.  Neuropeptide Y (NPY) inhibited a subgroup of dopaminergic and GABAergic neurons. (A) NPY reduced the firing rate in a subset of dopaminergic cells (extracellular single-unit recording). (B) In fast-firing GABAergic cells, NPY reduced the firing rate of 61% of neurons, recorded extracellularly. (C) Whole-cell patch-clamp recording of the GABAergic VTA neuron activity before, during, and after application of NPY (300 nm). (D) NPY caused hyperpolarization in GABAergic neurons in the presence of tetrodotoxin. (E) Bath application of NPY inhibited 37% of tested dopaminergic and 61% of GABAergic neurons.
