Movie S1. Phagocytosis of Listeria backpacks by Acanthamoeba castellanii. Four consecutive phagocytosis events are shown, using fluorescence time-lapse confocal laser scanning microscopy. Engulfment of the green fluorescent Listeria monocytogenes cells assembled into backpacks by Acanthamoeba occurs after protuberance of pseudopodia from the surface of the amoebal cell. Subsequent to phygocytosis, Listeria cells appear enclosed within cytoplasmic food vacuoles, where digestion takes place. Scale bar = 10 μm.
