Summary

Environmental problems are particularly acute in urban areas, and with an increasing global population, new and innovative solutions are required. The responsibility for protecting the environment and accelerating sustainable development rests with both industry (through eco-efficiency and clean production) and government (through a focus on pollution prevention). Public-private partnerships offer a significant means of bringing clean and sustainable services in the areas of waste, water, energy and pollution prevention to urban populations in developing countries.
