Electrical and electronic equipment manufacturers are subjected to an increasing number of restrictions on the substances that they can use to build their products. Many are hazardous substances that could potentially harm human beings or the environment, whereas some other more recent restrictions affect substances where no risk has been demonstrated. Legislation is being imposed worldwide with the EU in the forefront, with other countries following with similar restrictions. This article describes current restrictions worldwide and possible new future restrictions that might be imposed in the foreseeable future.
