    1. Valentine M. Moghadam is professor of sociology and women's studies, and director of the women's studies program at Purdue University, Indiana, USA. Prior to that she spent two years as a section chief in the Social and Human Sciences Sector of UNESCO. Born in Tehran, Iran, she is author of Modernizing Women: Gender and Social Change in the Middle East (first published 1993; updated second edition 2003), Women, Work and Economic Reform in the Middle East and North Africa (1998) and Globalizing Women: Transnational Feminist Networks (2005). She has also edited several books, including From Patriarchy to Empowerment: Women's Movements, Rights, and Participation in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia (Syracuse University Press, 2007).

  • Manilee Bagheritari

    1. Manilee Bagheritari holds an MSc in gender studies from the London School of Economics (LSE) and a BA in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley. She is an independent gender consultant based in Paris. She has been involved with projects concerning HIV and AIDS education, ending violence against women, advocating sexual rights, and gender analysis of international human rights laws and multiculturalism. She has worked for several UN organizations including UNESCO, UNOHCHR and UNAIDS in addition to ongoing volunteer work for various women's NGOs.
