The series of gastropods Thais lapillus, Littorina littorea, L. littoralis anL. saxatilis inhabit successively higher intertidal zones, and it was thought that they might show respiratory adaptation in relation to their various periods of exposure and submergence. To investigate this the respiratory rates of each species in air, and in water, have been measured at regular intervals over a period of 12 hours, and also subsequent to three and 16 hours drying.
