Aberrant egg-laying in the cuttlefish: a note

  • *Zoology Department, The University, Sheffield, 10.

An unusual specimen of a female cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis L.) is described that was found with a large mass of black egg-case material hanging from the funnel and mantle-cavity. The animal was sexually mature but there were no eggs in the egg-casing. The possibility is discussed that a failure of timing in the egg-laying process had occurred. Associated with the egg-case material was an actinian (Aiptasia sp.).
