Appendix S2. Overlap between Indian foxes based on the Volume of Intersection (VI) index indicated the existence of adult male?female dyads and strong territoriality between adjacent pairs. Annual intra-pair overlap was moderate to high (mean VI index=0.52?0.03 se, n=10). However, overlap between adjacent non-pair male?female, male?male and female?female combinations was low to negligible (Table AP2.1). Paired male?female associations showed greater overlap (VI) than unpaired male?female or same sex associations for all seasons (F3,57=32.54, P<0.0001). There was no difference in the number of male?male (F2,22=0.49, P=0.62) and female?female (F2,10=1.07, P=0.38) associations across seasons. Of the 31 male?female combinations that showed concurrent overlap, 21 were between putatively non-paired individuals with low overlap (Mean VI index=0.07?0.022 se). Male Indian foxes overlapped with a greater number of females during the wet season than during the subsequent cool-dry season or the hot-dry season (F2,19=3.53, P=0.049).
