The most prominent Ehrlich reactor present in the acid ethyl acetate fraction of extracts of seedling wheat roots is identified as α-N-malonyl-D-tryptophan. This compound is synthesized by roots fed with 14C-labelled D-tryptophan. The compound was without a significant effect on the growth of cultured excised wheat roots over the range 3.45 × 10−12 to 3.45 × 10−6 M.
